Installing STARS for Windows 1.48
Please note: STARS for Windows 1.48 is the last 16-bit version of STARS and has been
superceded by the 32-bit STARS. The only reason the be on this page is to download version
1.48 in preparation for migrating to STARS 2.xx. Version 1.48 is posted here for users who are using
Windows 3.1, 95, 98 or NT.
Download Instructions
You have two software download options. Select the one appropriate to your situation:
- Full Installation: If this is your first download of STARS or if you
need to install STARS on a new computer, download Full Installation.
- Quick Update: If you already have a working installation of STARS 1.xx
-- whether a trial copy or a paid-up site license -- and you want to upgrade to
version 1.48 in preparation for migrating to version 2.xx, download Quick Update.
Whether you download the Full Installation file or the Quick Update file, save the file into a folder where
you can find it later.
Installation Instructions
Installing or upgrading STARS is easy. Follow the instructions below that apply to what you'd like to do:
- Install STARS on a new standalone computer: If you will be using STARS on a solitary computer (or laptop)
that doesn't share its data with other users or a network server, and if you have never installed STARS
on this computer before, then you should have downloaded the Full Installation file named
STARS148.EXE. This is the complete STARS for Windows installation kit.
Double-click or run STARS148.EXE to execute it. This will automatically
unzip a set of compressed files and start the SETUP program to install STARS. You will be prompted for the
directory into which to install STARS for Windows. The default directory for installation is
C:\Program Files\winSTARS. You may change this installation
location as necessary.
- Upgrade an existing installation: If all you need to do is upgrade an older version of STARS 1.xx to
version 1.48, then you should have downloaded the Quick Update file named
STARS1.EXE. Now, you're ready for the next step. Copy
STARS1.EXE to the computer (or server) where STARS is currently installed.
Run or double-click STARS1.EXE to execute this program. This
will extract three updated STARS files: WINSTARS.EXE,
WINSTARS.HLP and STARSTRU.MDB.
As these files are unzipped, you will be prompted for the location where these files will be copied. Enter
the drive letter and folder where your existing STARS program is installed. The default directory for
installation is C:\Program Files\STARS for Windows. If you're upgrading
STARS on a server, your installation directory will probably be different. Be sure to enter the right drive
letter and subdirectory.
Starting STARS
Whether you are doing a new installation of STARS or updating an existing installation, you
now start STARS. If you are updating an existing
STARS installation, be sure that all users are logged out of STARS before proceeding
further.
Double-click the STARS icon. The screen will display a progress bar as it creates and/or
modifies your STARS databases for compatibility with the current version. Then, STARS will
display a message informing you whether the databases were properly created or updated.
Assuming your installation was successful, click OK and then restart STARS one more time from
the STARS icon. If yours is a new installation of STARS for Windows, you will need to
enter the program using the standard default master administrator ID
and password.

Final Note
If you plan to use the File / Import function within STARS for Windows
to import any of your existing STARS for DOS data, you must be sure that your
current version of STARS for DOS is version 1.62. Otherwise the file structures won't
be compatible. Please download version 1.62 of STARS for DOS
(if you haven't already done so) and upgrade your STARS for DOS to 1.62 before you proceed with
using STARS for Windows.
Again, thanks for your interest in our software. We look forward to receiving your feedback.
