| Absolute minimum requirements | 386, 20mb hard disk space free, 4mb RAM, Windows 95 | Until you get a better computer, you can get by with this configuration, but you will not like the slow performance. |
| Minimum practical configuration | 486/66, 100mb hard disk space free, 16mb RAM, Windows 98 | This is an OK configuration, particularly for a standalone installation or a dispatch desk. The speed and performance will be acceptable. |
| Recommended configuration | Pentium/233, 200mb hard disk space free, 32mb RAM, Windows NT/2000/XP | With this configuration, you'll be able to get your work done quickly and make good use of the program's capabilities to jump between different modules. |
You'll also need a printer, of course. Any graphics printer for which you have a Windows printer driver is acceptable. This includes most dot matrix, deskjet and laserjet printers manufactured in the past 10 years. There are, however, wide ranges in performance and speed. The new NIBRS Incident Report is highly graphics intensive. For printing this report, you will want to have a modern laserjet printer designed for processing and printing graphic images.
If you use STARS on several standalone computers, you may occasionally want to copy your data from one computer to another. This can be done by means of Export and Import utilities built into STARS.
STARS has been tested successfully on all versions of Windows and Microsoft networks. Record and file locking built into the program allows multiuser access to the data files.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to import any of your ICR data. The data structure required by the new Incident Report is so radically different from the structure used in STARS for DOS that no ICR data import is possible. Thus, if you have any open Incident Reports that you have created in STARS for DOS, you will want to keep your installation of STARS for DOS active at least until you have closed these open cases. You will open new cases in STARS for Windows.
Important note: In order to use the STARS for Windows import function, you must be running version 1.62 of STARS for DOS. This is very important so please check your version of STARS for DOS before proceeding. If you do not have version 1.62, please download this latest version and the accompanying Administrator's Guide from this web site. Version 1.62 of STARS for DOS includes many new features that have been added during the past year.
