Cienfuegos
Pearl of the south
April 13, 2013: From Trinidad, my next stop was a city of 170,000 on a beautiful Caribbean bay. This is the only major city in Cuba with a strong French influence

A casual game of chess
In contrast to Trinidad, this is a fairly modern city with paved streets and relatively few tourists. It was refreshing to see normal people doing normal things, such as high school students relaxing outdoors at lunchtime, and old men playing chess in the shade of a covered sidewalk.

Oficina Provincial
Cienfuegos has a lot of well-preserved 19th century architechture centered around a plaza dedicated to José Marti. But these buildings aren't museums. They're functioning theatres, restaurants, clubs and government offices.

Interior of the theatre
The Teatro Tomás Terry is an especially handsome building. To get the full experience, I attended a dance concert here one evening. If the dancers weren't amazing enough, the Art Deco ceilings and fixtures were.
